Evaluation is absolutely key when it comes to improving our own teaching practice, as well as the learning experience of our students.
However, it is also important when it comes to improving the courses that we deliver – both currently, and next year, and the years after that.
Here are some top tips for improving your teaching and learning through sound steps to effective evaluation.
1) CHOOSE WHAT TO EVALUATE
Decide whether to start with feedback on one topic or session, before moving on to asking for comments on an entire course or programme.
2) DEMYSTIFY THE PROCESS
Manage your students' expectations around the feedback you are seeking.
Let them know how, what and when is expected of them.
3) PLAN WHAT YOU WANT TO FIND OUT ABOUT
Be sure to have a focus for which aspects of your teaching where you feel the student feedback will be most valuable.
4) CHOOSE THE TYPE OF EVALUATION YOU WANT TO UNDERTAKE
Do you want to get quick feedback, using sticky notes? Or do you want to use a more detailed survey – perhaps with testimonials?
5) PILOT YOUR APPROACH
Seek feedback from a 'critical friend' before starting the process of capturing the feedback from your students. Will the questions answer the areas you want to focus on?
6) RUN YOUR EVALUATION
Conduct the evaluation with your students in line with how and what your communciated to them. Allow them enough time to complete the process and ensure your store it safely and securely.
7) ANALYSE THE DATA
Analyse the results and reflect on how you can enhance your teaching provision - both to benefit your students, your teaching and your course.
8) PUBLISH AND SHARE THE RESULTS
Communicate the results to your students AND publish quotes and statistics on your social networks, blogs and websites. Show your commitment to your teaching AND your learners!
